Hess Thaysen, E., Bruusgaard, A. & Eriksen, Birthe. 1970. Evaluation of the Efficiency of Bile Salt Recirculation in Patients with Terminal Ileopathies by Means of Deoxycholate Determinations in Duodenal Aspirates. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 39-47.The efficiency of ileal bile salt reabsorption has been appraised in 6 ileectomized patients, 5 patients with terminal ileitis, and 8 controls. Following cholecystokinin stimulation, deoxycholate concentration has been measured in duodenal aspirates. In the control group the mean values ± 2 standard deviations for the maximum deoxycholate concentration were 193-477 mg per 100 ml aspirate. In both groups of patients the mean values were significantly lower, presumably indicating a compromised enterohepatic circuit of bile salts. In harmony with this interpretation most patients had steatorrhoea and low or low normal concentrations of serum cholesterol.
