Oxidation ofn‐alkanes and alk‐1‐enes by aPenicillium species andPseudomonas aeruginosa resulted in the formation of intermediates arising from the oxidation of methylene groups. A catabolic pathway involving oxidation of the hydrocarbon to a secondary alcohol and the corresponding ketone, followed by the formation and subsequent cleavage of an ester intermediate is presented.
