Variational principles are derived which are equivalent to the generalised Marchenko equation in the inverse scattering problem for the Schrodinger equation. The three-dimensional case is treated explicitly but the methods and conclusions hold also in one and two dimensions. New results include a simpler equation for the case with bound states and show that the generalised Marchenko equation is always solvable.
