It has been demonstrated that the intensity and depolarization characteristics of resonance Raman effect can be advantageously used to determine the orientational order parameters in liquid crystals. The second and fourth order parameters in nematic MBBA have been obtained at the temperatures near the nematic-isotropic transition point, by measuring the depolarization ratios of a resonant Raman line of β-carotene embedded in the liquid crystal. The result has been discussed by comparing with those of previous works on neat MBBA, and also the validity of the mean field theory has been investigated.
