Relationships have been established between the relative grain yield of maize (the yield expressed as a percentage of the maximum) and the concentration of N in leaves and grain. Maximum grain yield was estimated to occur with a N concentration of3.21% in ear leaves sampled at 50% silking, and 1.52% in grain. A method is described for basing fertiliser N recommendations in continuous cropping on chemical analysis of leaves or grain.
