The reaction of an aminoxyl and the corresponding hydroxylamine with silylating agents is studied in detail. The gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analysis of the products is consistent with the production of an unsaturated product when an alkyl group with exchangeable hydrogens is attached to the nitrone group. The structure of this compound is confirmed by deuteration. It is concluded that aminoxyls themselves do not derivatize wth silylating agents.
