Rotor trash accumulation, end breakage, and yarn strength were compared for three different open-end machines when fed with slivers from different cottons and different cards. One of the open-end machines was an early model with no trash cleaner, another was a four-rotor machine with an early model trash cleaner, and the third was a late model open-end machine with a trash cleaner. Poorly prepared sliver not only had a greater amount of trash but also bigger particle sizes. While this condition had the greatest adverse effect on the early model open-end machine, it also had an adverse effect on the late model machine. Therefore, regardless of the open, end machines a mill has, good sliver preparation. especially in carding, is rec ommended.
