No method has so far been established for evaluating the knittability of knitting yarn properly. Thus, any defective yarn in Knittability cannot be found until it has actually been knitted. As an aid to olve this problem, we have investigated various methods of evaluating the knittability of yarns, and reached the following conclusions : (1) The analysis of knitting mechanism has revealed the fact that the measurements of eight presumed physical properties of yarns will enable us to evaluate the knittability of yarns properly at the stage of yarn. (2) So, it is possible not only to find out the defective yarn at the yarn stage, but also to clear up its cause. (3) Generally, the following four physical properties have a great bearing on knittability : (a) Resistance to unwinding of yarn out of a cone. (b) Friction between yarns themselves. (c) Friction between a yarn and a knitting needle. (d) Bending resistance of yarn.Next, we have produced by way of trial an apparatus which can measure the said four important physical properties of yarn, simultaneously and synthetically, in terms of yarn tension, and tested various yarns. The results of such measurements show a good correlation with the actual yarn knittability. Thus, it has been found that the apparatus can easily measure the knittability ofyarn as one numerical value.
