The x-ray K absorption edge of zinc has been studied in metallic zinc, zinc oxide, zinc sulphate, zinc carbonate and in zinc acetate. In all the compounds investigated, it has been observed that the absorption discontinuity shifts towards high energy side with respect to the discontinuity in pure metal. The shift which is due to the change in the distribution of valence electrons is maximum in the case of zinc sulphate. These shifts have been measured, and the charge on the zinc atom in these compounds has been calculated. Measurements were carried out with the help of a 100 cm curved crystal transmission spectrograph of Cauchoise design.
