Stable free radicals, together with horseradish peroxidase, promoted degradation of indole‐3‐acetic acid (IAA). These reactions were retarded by the free radical scavengers Bromoxynil, Na‐benzoate and kinetin. Certain free radicals promoted, but the free radical scavenger Bromoxynil retarded ethylene production in apple slices and mung bean stem tissues. The interdependency of free radicals and free radical scavengers in systems controlling IAA levels and ethylene production is discussed.
