The strain is diphasic and consists of both rough and smooth colonial forms, many producing a characteristic yellow pigment. Other distinctive characteristics are starch hydrolysis, growth on 6.5% sodium chloride, assimilation of maltose and sucrose, inability to produce acid from sucrose and lactose, and inability to grow at a pH of 5.6 (1). This organism has been isolated from clinical specimens and hospital environments but is usually considered to be nonpathogenic and a common laboratory contaminant (2)....References1.
