The Mössbauer emission spectra of 57Co2+ in MgF2, CaF2, K2CoF4, and MgCl2 have been studied. Aliovalent charge states (Fe3+) have been observed in several of these salts. A general thermodynamic model, based on the correlation between the proportion of Fe3+ ions and the Madelung potential at the cation site in the host, is proposed to account for the stabilization of various iron species after 57Co electron capture in simple ligand compounds.
