The mean survival time for a group of 166 patients with verified pancreatic carcinoma was only 7.5 months after diagnosis was made. Bypass procedures helped relieve biliary and intestinal obstruction, but they did not alter the total survival time significantly. Although oncolytic drugs and roentgenotherapy did not increase survival time, these adjunctive measures may improve the quality of the remaining life and relieve pain. These benefits are difficult to evaluate, and their use must be tailored to fit the needs of the individual patient.
