The latter technique was advocated initially over 100 years ago by Beale (1) who, in 1858, examined vomitus by paraffin block technique. In 1909, Marini (2) conceived the idea that fresh material obtained by gastric lavage might contain better preserved malignant cells. He was able to obtain malignant cells in 32 of 37 gastric and esophageal carcinomas, a remarkable accomplishment considering that the preparations...References1.
