Sociological field study reveals declining grassroots involvement in Basic Christian Communities, suggesting administrative drift hinders civic engagement.
This article offers a sociological study of the historical origin, objectives, and present status of Basic Christian Communities (BCCs), with special reference to the Kottar diocese in Kanniyakumari district. Inspired by liberation theology and the Latin American model, Kottar diocese formed BCC units across parishes, which became central to diocesan mission. Using observation, focus group discussions, and in-person interviews, this study provides baseline data on the current status and activities. The findings reveal degenerative trends as the leaders of BCCs become overly engrossed in the administrative affairs of the Church, showing little concern for the challenges faced by the people. It proposes workable strategies to revitalise BCCs, improve effectiveness of ministry, and enhance civic engagement.
