Interference effects between intravalence and extravalence excitations in the optical spectrum of a large molecule are considered. The sharp antiresonances observed in the Rydberg spectrum of the naphthalene molecule are interpreted in terms of configuration interaction between zero-order Rydberg levels and an inhomogeneously broadened π→π* transition.
