Key result
Accelerometer signals from stair climbing and timed up-and-go tests best predict 6MWT distance post-cardiac surgery.
Why the study?
The 6-Minute Walk Test standardly measures functional capacity in cardiac rehabilitation but requires sustained effort and adequate walking space.
Cross-Sectional (n=80)
Brief wearable accelerometer testing during short exercises like stair climbing or the timed up-and-go test shows potential to estimate 6-minute walk distance in frail cardiac rehabilitation patients.
May support brief accelerometer tests to estimate 6MWT in frail post-cardiac surgery patients; leaves open clinical utility pending prospective validation.
The six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a standard measure of functional capacity in cardiac rehabilitation but requires sustained effort and adequate walking space. In 80 elderly patients with frailty (Edmonton Frail Scale ≥ 4) after open-heart surgery, we compared wearable Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Accelerometer (ACC) signals recorded during five exercise tests for estimating 6MWT distance. Signals were acquired with a single chest-worn device, and RidgeCV and Random Forest models were evaluated under Leave-One-Subject-Out (LOSO) cross-validation. ACC signals from stair climbing (ρ = 0.37) and the timed up-and-go test (ρ = 0.36) provided the strongest prediction, driven by stride period and cadence. Combining ECG with ACC yielded no significant improvement, and veloergometry signals did not transfer to walking capacity. Brief wearable testing showed potential to complement the 6MWT. 전체보기 #frailty #6-minute walk test #ECG #accelerometer #cardiac rehabilitation #machine learning

SeungJun Oh (2026) conducted a cross-sectional in Frailty after open-heart surgery (n=80). Wearable ECG and Accelerometer signals during short-duration exercise tests was evaluated on 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) distance (ρ = 0.37). Accelerometer signals from stair climbing (ρ = 0.37) and the timed up-and-go test (ρ = 0.36) provided the strongest prediction of 6-minute walk distance in frail elderly post-cardiac surgery patients.
