A CO ion with axial symmetry around 〈111〉 is detected in the KBr lattice by means of electron paramagnetic resonance. This molecular ion occupies an anion vacancy and rotates rapidly around the OO axis, which coincides with a 〈111〉 direction. The spin densities on the carbon atomic orbitals are deduced from the analysis of the 13C hyperfine tensor. A comparison with the isoelectronic NO2 molecule in the same host lattice and location is made.
