The velocity distribution of caesium atoms issuing from a multi-channel glass capillary array has been studied and an energy-exchange process proposed to account for the modification to a Maxwellian distribution. The importance of knowing the exact distribution in the measurement of atomic beam total scattering cross sections is indicated by the calculation of the appropriate kinetic averaging factors.
