We have demonstrated the usefulness of employing a thermal-image furnace for in situ , high-temperature studies of oxide ceramics in air. Using Rietveld refinements lattice parameters and expansion coefficients can be measured up to 2000 °C in air. The use of an in situ temperature reference material is essential to monitor the sample temperature. Pt is effectively non-reactive with most oxide ceramics, which makes it an attractive in situ crystallographic ‘thermometer’ for studies at least up to 1550 °C; MgO and CeO 2 have been tested as internal thermometer materials for temperatures above 1550 °C.
