A simply constructed spark source is described, capable of producing intense, predominantly ultra-violet light pulses of risetime 3 ns, half-width 7½ ns. The source can be triggered with a jitter of ±3½ ns, or allowed to free-run. The design permits rapid adjustment or renewal of the electrodes and positioning of the focused spark under conditions of high ambient lighting.
