Differential scanning calorimetry combined with neutron diffraction has been used to characterize the mixing behavior of crystalline monolayers of binary mixtures of linear alcohols adsorbed from solution to a graphite surface. The results indicate that for pairs of alcohols with alkyl chain lengths of C5− C11 and which differ in length by two or more methylene groups there is phase separation in the mixed monolayers. These results are shown to be in agreement with a recent quantitative model of phase separation in two-dimensional physisorbed monolayers.
