Strains of Kurthia zopfii were degraded by acid methanolysis and the non‐hydroxylated fatty acid esters so released were examined by gas liquid chromatography. The major fatty acid types were straight‐chain, anteiso ‐ and iso ‐methyl branched‐chain acids. Monounsaturated fatty acids were not detected. The major fatty acid in five of the six strains examined consisted of 12‐methyltetra‐decanoic ( anteiso ‐C 15 ) acid. The other strain possessed major amounts of both 13‐methyltetradecanoic ( iso ‐C 15 ) and anteiso ‐C 15 acids. Polar lipids of all the strains were examined by two‐dimensional thin‐layer chromatography. All possessed a very simple polar lipid composition consisting of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine.
