A new polymerizable ultraviolet stabilizer, 4‐acetyl‐3‐hydroxyphenyl methacrylate (AHPM), was synthesized and characterized. It was copolymerized with styrene in different molar ratios to provide a new UV absorbing and stabilizing system. The ultraviolet spectra of AHPM and its copolymers were determined. The fluorescence spectra of AHPM and its copolymers with styrene at different ratios were also investigated. The efficiency of AHPM as an ultraviolet stabilizer was examined by studying the change of the inherent viscosity of the copolymer during the exposure of the polymer to UV irradiation.
