Many attempts have been made to prepare mammalian RNA polymerase in a soluble and stable condition (Roeder and Rutter, 1969) since the first report of its isolation (Weiss, 1960) in a firmly DNA-associated form. Although the enzyme could be solubilized and partially purified, the yields of activity were generally low and the purified preparations were very unstable.
