Using rifampicin-resistant denitrifier strains added to soil we found that some denitrifier strains were more competitive with indigenous soil microbes under aerobic conditions than under conditions which favored denitrification. Relative growth rates of denitrifiers in soil were unrelated to growth rates in pure cultures.
