SUMMARY The extent of the decomposition ofSphagnum magellanicumleaves in an ombrophilous peat mire was assessed by direct observation using light and scanning electron microscopy. Although many leaves had become buried to depths of up to 30 cm without being visibly damaged there was a small proportion in which the green and hyaline cells were extensively decomposed. The progressive destruction of these cells was clearly visible using scanning microscopy. The role of fungi and animals in these processes was examined and although the former group was apparently active, especially in the superficial layers of peat, the restricted animal populations appeared to be of minor importance in the destruction of the senescentSphagnumleaves.
