Growth rings in Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn are "anomalous" in that each consists of xylem, phloem, and conjunctive tissue. The number of rings present in a stem section is related to its diameter but, within sections of the same age, ring number varies. An endogenous control ofgrowth-ring development is suggested for the southern Florida population studied. Forest Sci. 17:462-465.
