Magnetic domain control techniqes of Co-Zr-Nb thin film main-poles of single-pole heads have been studied. The magnetic domains of the main-poles can be controlled by groovs which are lined up along the easy axis oriented in the direction of the track width. The grooved main-poles have stable domain structures containning small closure edge domains. Using single-pole heads with the grooved main-poles, stable and sensitive head performances are attained. Such techniques as grooving are useful for narrow track heads whose domain structure is easy to be disordered.
