The population development of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) on bird cherry has been studied during a four year period. There was a big difference in aphid abundance between the years. The appearance of alatae on bird cherry and first catch of emigrants in a suction trap were correlated. The peak in suction trap catches was associated with the decline of the population on bird cherry. There was no correlation between spring temperatures and first catch in the suction trap. It is concluded that crowding has an important effect on the development of alatae and that the emigrants belong to the second generation in years with a lot of aphids on bird cherry and to the third generation when there are few aphids.
