Mullite has been prepared by firing colloidal aluminosilicate gels seeded with crystalline mullite. The seeded gel samples exhibited a variety of microstructures which were dependent on seed concentration. In samples where the volume fraction of seeds was relatively high, an equiaxed grain microstructure was observed. Insamples with a low seed concentration, seed particles grew to form whiskerlike grains with a high aspect ratio within a fine grain matrix.
