Soviet physicians have developed a surgical technique which lessens or eliminates hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism. The technique involves individual, deep applications of heat in the peripheral cornea, Over 2,000 human cases have been performed since 1984. Although the Soviet results are very promising, clinical introduction of the technique in the United States should not proceed until efficacy and safety have been confirmed.
