Building on Concrete Results with Phase-Change Materials: A composite phase-change material (PCM) consisting of coal-series kaolinite (Kc) and a binary organic mixture of capric–lauric acid was prepared by vacuum impregnation, as described in the Full Paper on page 77 by Huaming Yang and Songyang Liu of Central South University in Changsha, China. Dimethyl sulfoxide was used as an intercalation agent to increase the interlayer Kc space, thereby enhancing the storage energy density of the composite. The composite shows improved thermal reliability and chemical stability in comparison to previous results, and the technology could be used to help reduce indoor temperature and energy consumption.
