Thermal vortex fluctuations for two-dimensional (2D) superconductors and the 2D Coulomb gas scaling concept is reviewed and applied to layered superconductors. The non-observability of a Kosterlitz-Thouless critical region is emphasized. The temperature dependence of the linear term in the 2D vortex-antivortex interaction, caused by the interlayer coupling, is described together with the related critical current. The abrupt 3D to 2D crossover just above T c is discussed and is illustrated by an analysis of resistance data for YBCO/PBCO superlattices.
