A brief general discussion of the loss mechanisms of ferrites and garnets is given. An idealized representation of the absorption loss as a function of frequency and the applied magnetic field is utilized to define five distinct regions within which devices using ferrimagnetic materials may be operated with low absorption loss. Slow-wave transmission lines for uhf frequencies are discussed, and the observed phase shifts per unit length for these and a conventional transmission line are given. It is concluded that through the use of slow-wave transmission lines phase shifters can be designed at uhf frequencies which require as little as one-fourth the length required by a conventional transmission line.
