The experiments indicate that little or no CO(2) enters normal cells of Valonia except in the form of undissociated molecules. Whenever the interior of a cell is more acid than the surrounding medium (excess base being the same in both) we may expect that at equilibrium the internal concentration of total CO(2) will be less than the external.
