This case report describes a rare instance of malignant hemangioendothelioma of the greater omentum, highlighting the difficulty of preoperative diagnosis and poor prognosis.
Omental hemangioendothelioma may cause fatal postoperative heart failure; single case leaves diagnostic and therapeutic strategies open.
Emergency operation was performed upon a 62-year-old woman with diffuse peritonitis. Multiple hematomalike tumors were recognized in the peritoneal cavity mainly on the greater omentum. She died of heart failure 26 days after the operation. Autopsy revealed that these hematoma-like tumors were histologically malignant hemangioendothelioma with metastases to multiple organs including the brain. In Japan, only one case of malignant hemangioendothelioma of the greater omentum was reported. In the English language literatures, only 2 cases were reported. We reported this case with reviewing literatures.
