The integrated X-ray flux over a certain aperture was measured using a flow proportional counter, and this was compared with the response of a scintillator-photomultiplier combination. The measurements were repeated for several nearly monochromatic X-ray sources. Thus the scintillator-photomultiplier combination was calibrated for several X-ray energies. From this calibration the variation of the scintillator quantum conversion efficiency with X-ray energy was obtained. It was found that the efficiency of the scintillator used (NE 102A) did not vary significantly for X-ray energies from 1.8 to 4.5 kev.
