The effect of prolonged ACTH administration on plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone secretory rate (ASR) was investigated in 8 patients on a sodium restricted diet. In all patients both upright and recumbent PRA decreased, the mean decrease for the upright being 43% and for the recumbent PRA 77% of control values. The ASR decreased by 50%. No correlation was found between the extent of the decrease of ASR and of PRA. The decrease of both PRA and ASR could not be explained by sodium retention.
