The cardinalins, a series of pyranonaphthoquinone dehydrodimers and their hydroquinone precursors, are isolated from the New Zealand toadstool Dermocybe cardinalis and their structures and relative stereochemistries are deduced from the spectroscopic data. The cardinalins are the first pyranonaphthoquinones to be found in the Higher Fungi.
