A method to evaluate renal function ex vivo after renal preservation has proved to be successful and practical. A total of 114 kidneys were preserved by various techniques and observed for long periods for ultimate survival. Early renal blood flow greater than 1 cc/gm/min was a reliable indicator of renal survival. Furthermore, renal blood flows above this level can be used to predict the degree of renal function as determined by postoperative blood urea nitrogen levels.
