The errors associated with temperature measurement in glass by thermocouples and optical means are examined. Thermocouple measurements will have significant errors when the thermocouple is placed near a bounding surface or in glass which has a significant temperature gradient. In the spectral scanning technique, spectral measurements at various wavelengths are used to infer the temperature distribution through the glass. Errors in spectral measurements are strongly magnified in the solution for the temperature profile; mathematical smoothing tends to reduce the error. Absorption techniques can be used to measure glass temperature accurately in certain circumstances.
