I grew tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Tropic) plants for 26 d from transplanting in full nutrient solution with and without polymers in nutrient solution at two different pH values. An anionic polyacrylamide and a polysaccharide (from guar bean) each at 100 mg L-1 in solution slightly improved yields at both pH values. A cationic polymer at the same concentration decreased yields. There were no apparent nutritional reasons for the effects.
