In this paper, the origins of the discrepancy between the solution obtained using the extended Stokes series method of M. Van Dyke and that obtained using other theoretical, experimental and numerical techniques for the friction factor ratio in coiled tubes in laminar flow are investigated in the light of new numerical evidence. It is suggested that the cause of the discrepancy lies in the use of only the first 12 terms in the Stokes series to determine its analytic structure for all Dean numbers.
