The effect of treatment in vivo with gold thiosulphate on the skin collagen of normal and lathyritic rats has been investigated. While the neutral‐salt‐soluble collagen is not affected by gold thiosulphate, the insoluble collagen content is increased. The solubility in urea of the insoluble collagen is lowered. The lathyritic effect is partly reversed. The gold thiosulphate thus reacts with the insoluble collagen introducing additional cross‐links. The biosynthesis of collagen does not appear to be affected.
