The use of a rf-only quadrupole in tandem with a normal resolving quadrupole introduces artifacts in the mass spectra obtained using such an instrument. The reason for this is the presence of fringe fields in the region between the two quadrupoles. We report here the use of leaky dielectric material in between the two quadrupoles to avoid these artifacts.
