Gels based on a cationic hydrophobically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose (cat-HMHEC) may display nonmonotonic volume changes with time (deswelling followed by reswelling) when immersed in a solution of a charged amphiphile (surfactant or hydrophobically modified polymer). These nonmonotonic volume changes during equilibration reflect the nonmonotonic equilibrium swelling isotherms obtained at increasing amphiphile concentrations for the same systems. It is possible to control both the kinetics and the nature (monotonic or nonmonotonic) of the transient volume changes by changing the concentration or type of the amphiphile or by adding simple salt.
