Introduction The establishment of linkage groups in common wheat (llexaploid) and their association with specific chromoson~es is a two-step process as in diploid organisms. The procedure, however, is reversed and involves first the association of genes with chromosomes by non-conventional methods of gcnetic analysis using nullisomics and monosomics, and then, the deternli~lation of cross over distances alllong genes found to be located on a particular chromosome. This report deals with the first in a series of studies planned to associate genes controlling various morphological characters with specific chromosomes and to use solne of thcse as chromosome markers. Specifically, it concerns the association of genes co~ltrolling the characters pubescent vs. glabrous glumes, dense vs. lax spikes and purple vs, white culms with specific chromosomes using the monosomic F, and substitution lines method of analysis.
