An important stage in the simulation of coherent clutter textures is the ability to deduce the surface cross-section autocorrelation function (ACF) from the measured image intensity ACF. Previously this inversion process has been derived exactly for a few simple models. In this paper an approach is proposed which allows arbitrary surface spectra to be reconstructed approximately. The validity of the method is demonstrated by comparing an example of sonar clutter with simulated textures based on the best simple model alone or on this more general method.
