In an attempt to explain some of the anomalous properties of vitreous silica, measurements have been made of the reflection spectra of quartz, cristobalite and vitreous silica from room temperature to 1100°C. It has been found possible to describe the experimental observations in terms of the force constants and geometry of a simplified model of silica, changes in the angle between neighbouring silicon-oxygen tetrahedra being particularly important.
